Marigold strings are the everyday decoration of Indian festivals: round yellow and orange heads threaded close together on a cord about 3, 6 or 10 feet long. Choose all yellow, all orange, or the two colors alternating.

How it is used: Hung across doorways and windows, wound around pillars and pooja mandapams, and draped on deity pictures for Ganesh Chaturthi, Navaratri, Diwali and house-warmings.

Care & handling

Keep the string wrapped, or loosely in a damp paper towel inside a closed container, in the refrigerator (not the freezer) until you need it. A light sprinkle of water stops the flowers drying out.
